WE ARE SWITCHING BREEDS!!!  WE HAVE SOLD ALL BUT 2 OF OUR BLACKBELLIES.  WE NOW ARE GOING TO BE RAISING KATAHDINS.

American Blackbelly sheep (AB) are hair sheep.  Hair sheep have hair instead of wool.  In the winter, they put on a wool undercoat to keep warm.  When the weather warms up, the wool falls off.

ABs are a cousin to the Barbados Blackbelly sheep, which originated in Barbados.  The Barbados Blackbelly (BB) sheep are different in that the rams do not have horns.

AB sheep are distinguished from other hair sheep by their black bellies and legs.  The top color ranges from light blond to dark mahogany.  We prefer the darker colors, but they are all beautiful.  The rams have large, curled horns.  The ewes sometimes have little horn buds, but nothing substantial.

Around here, most people call them Barbado.  The description "Barbado" refers to any such hair sheep with no distinct traits.  They include all sorts of shapes and colors.

For more information on these sheep and their care, please see the Helpful Info page.

This is Big Boy, our primary ram.

Our first group of ewes.
They were pregnant, which we did not know about at the time.  Talk about a surprise!  If you're not ready for a growing flock yet, be sure to ask if the ewes are pregnant before you buy.
